Manuscripts must be in English, and initially three copies must be submitted to the editor. The initial submission should be prepared in the general format of published papers except that the narrative portion must be double spaced. Tables and figures should be prepared in their "final" form (i.e., as they might appear in the final version). Authors should consult a recent issue of the Journal as a guide to format and style.
Upon acceptance of a manuscript, the author(s) must submit a single original copy on white paper. Each page must be numbered lightly in pencil at the top. The final version of the manuscript should be single spaced, and the narrative, including the Literature Cited section, should not exceed twelve pages in length. The size of type should be such as to survive a 20% photo-reduction and still be readable. Note below the absolute restrictions regarding type fonts and sizes.
General Organization
Each manuscript must contain the following titled sections: ABSTRACT, INTRODUCTION, METHODS AND MATERIALS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION, and LITERATURE CITED. The RESULTS and DISCUSSION may be combined. Manuscripts that do not exceed four single-spaced pages in length may be constructed as "Notes," in which case the only titled heading required is the ABSTRACT. Abbreviations and symbols should follow the guidelines of the CBE Style Manual. Use of the ampersand (&) should be avoided.
Type Fonts and Sizes
Use of bold type face should be avoided. The narrative part of the manuscript must be prepared using one of the following type styles and sizes, and only one of these type styles should be used throughout, including within figures and tables:
Bookman, 12 pt; New Century Schoolbook, 12 pt; New York, 11 pt; Times, 13 pt; Times Roman, 13 pt; or Times New Roman, 13 pt.
Typing Margins
The typed area of the first page (the ABSTRACT page), including any footnotes, must be 16.5 cm (width) x approx. 23 cm (length), leaving a blank space at the top where the title, name(s) of author(s) and affiliation(s) will be typeset by us. This information should be provided on a separate title page. All pages following page one must have a width of typed material of 16.5 cm; the length of text on these pages may be whatever is convenient and workable. Since we print directly from this final copy, the 16.5 cm width is critical! The right margin of text should not be "justified."
Tables and Figures
All tables and figures must be numbered and accompanied by descriptive titles or legends. It is preferred that tables and figures be prepared in the 16.5 cm (width) format; however, this is not an absolute requirement. Tables and figures may be larger as long as their component parts (e.g., words, symbols, etc.) are constructed of sufficient size and clarity to survive any photo-reduction that may be required in order to fit a page in the Journal. The title of each table must be a part of that table; the title or legend for a figure must be typed on a separate page (i.e., separate from the figure) and in the 16.5 cm width format. All tables, figure legends, and figures should be collected at the end of the manuscript. The actual figures should be identified by numbers on their reverse sides.
Footnotes
Footnotes, with alphabetically noted superscripts of readable size, should be single-spaced and at the bottoms of pages and separated from the text by an intervening solid line. Footnotes that reference the title or author(s) should be placed at the bottom of the abstract page. Footnotes that reference a table should be placed immediately below the table. Footnotes should not be used for figures.
References
Citations in the text of the manuscript must be in the author-year style. When citing a work of more than two authors, the first-named author and the notation "et al." should be used. Collected references should be listed, with titles, at the end of the manuscript alphabetically by the first authors' names. This Literature Cited section should be single-spaced in its entirety.
Page Charges and Reprint Costs
A charge of $30.00 per printed page will be assessed for every manuscript. There will be no additional charges for assembling tables or figures. The cost of separate reprints varies with manuscript length and the number of reprints that are ordered; authors will be advised of current prices when reprint order forms are distributed following acceptance of a manuscript.
